La Terraza Mexican Restaurant in Old Sacramento California: A Review

La Terraza Disappointed This Hungry Traveler

La Terraza Mexican Restaurant in Old Sacramento, California is located at 1027 2nd Street. The restaurant is located upstairs in the heart of Old Town Sacramento. It is on the corner of 2nd and K Street. While visiting Sacramento with friends who live in the area, we decided to try La Terraza after a long amount of walking in the Old Town area.

Old Town Sacramento is loaded with shops and restaurants along the cobblestone roads. Pedestrians compete with the occasional horse drawn carriage. I have been to Old Town Sacramento half a dozen times over the years, and though I still enjoy it, it does not seem as clean and safe as it once did. La Terraza is located above a tattoo shop but it seemed safe and clean.

La Terraza Mexican Restaurant is surrounded by small specialty retail stores and an ice cream shop. My group of 4 adults and 2 kids had a craving for Mexican food and I specifically wanted the California style of Mexican cuisine that I grew up with (prior to moving to Texas). The interior of the restaurant was a little dark but was clean and pleasant enough. The bar inside the La Terraza has been remodeled and looked nice. The hostess greeted us and used our suggestion of moving 2 tables together to seat all of us.

The chips and salsa were not bad, but nothing exceptional. The problems arose when the waiter took our order and apparently there was a language barrier. I ordered a chicken taco salad, while my friends tried the enchiladas, quesadillas and tamales. The food from La Terraza took longer to arrive than it should have considering we were one of only three tables of customers.

Though my taco salad from La Terraza was extremely large, I found it had been much fuller of lettuce than chicken or other ingredients. The taste was ok but I would not order it again. My friend that ordered the enchiladas with red sauce found that her sauce was actually brown. This was supposed to be the La Terraza version of mole sauce but it actually looked and tasted like brown gravy. She ended up sending the food back and getting the cheese quesadillas instead. The quesadillas were good. The iced teas were fine and none of us tried the alcohol from the bar.

Considering the taste and quality of the food, it seemed over priced. Most meals cost $12-$15 but I have found small Mexican restaurants in California and Texas that serve much better tasting food for half that cost. I would rate La Terraza Mexican Restaurant with 2 of 5 stars and could not recommend it for those of you who visit Old Town Sacramento and are looking for great tasting, authentic Mexican food.

Make sure you do not order anything with the brown sauce, unless you like brown gravy on your Mexican food.

We had a horrible Mexican food experience when we were driving from the airport to Taos, NM and thought it was a foreshadowing of more to come but fortunately the food improved and we learned not to stop at a casino/gas station/cafeteria. LOL!
