What exactly is the LA Weight Loss diet? It's basically a low-calorie diet with a few restrictions. Clients are allowed 2100 mg of sodium per day (which is also the ADA guideline), no sugar or sweets until the diet goes into the maintenance phase (once the goal weight is reached), and three alcoholic beverages per week. While clients don't have to count their calories, they meet with LA Weight Loss Center counselors who help set up their diet in portion sizes. Clients meet with their counselors one-on-one weekly and weigh in to see the progress of their program.
The counselors are not nutritionists or dietitians, but former LA Weight Loss Center clients who have been trained by company dietitians. The counselors do have access to registered dietitians, but they are not on-site, and they do not oversee the recommendations of the counselors unless needed.
LA Weight Loss has its own brand of snacks, supplements, meal replacements and bars that clients can only buy through the LA Weight Loss Centers. Clients are not required to buy these, but the counselors push them to, since individual counselors do earn a commission on the sales of these products. Because of this, clients often feel pressured to purchase the items.
The price of the LA Weight Loss program varies depending on how much you spend on the LA Weight Loss products. The cost of the program varies per center, as they are individually franchised. There is a registration fee and a weekly cost (reported to be $5-$8 by WebMD's Healthy Eating and Diet Guide). The supplements, bars, meal replacements and snacks add to the cost.
There are reports many individuals who are on LA Weight lose weight. These individuals enjoy the fact that they have an easy-to-follow diet that is laid out for them personally by the LA Weight Loss counselors. LA Weight Loss features several success stories on their website.
However, many dispute this. In 2006, LA Weight Loss had to pay penalties to the State of Washington as part of a lawsuit, then had to enter into a settlement with the state. According to the Washington State Office of the Attorney General, "LA Weight Loss continued to misrepresent program costs and make unsubstantiated health claims even after paying penalties as part of a previous state lawsuit." The settlement forced LA Weight Loss to refund money to customers at several locations. There are also various consumer complaints about the diet and financial issues as well, available on Consumer Affairs' website.

If you decide to give LA Weight Loss Center's diet a try, be cautious of joining fees and read everything carefully before signing it. Do not sign anything unless you are absolutely sure of what you're getting into, how to get out if necessary and what is required of you. Make sure all of these are explicitly spelled out in the contract. While it may take longer to sign up if you make the representatives go through your contract line by line, it could save you a lot of money and stress in the future.
