Labor Day in Memphis, Tennessee is full of fun and history. A lot of people tend to celebrate it by hanging out at the BBQ or hitting the stores for all of the great Labor Day sales. As you can see there are other options to enjoy it. Have you ever took the time to get to know why this holiday is important? Here is some history on how the holiday became a federal holiday.

In 1894 Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday to observe Labor Day. It actually originated as a day off for the working man back in 1884 by the Central Labor Union. From the beginning they had parades and festival activities that were family oriented so the workers and families could enjoy the holiday.

These days people enjoy picnics or BBQ's and a lot of them hold gatherings of their friends and families to eat and have fun. This is also a big weekend for family reunions. Another Labor Day staple is the MDA Telethon on Television. MDA uses this weekend to raise funds for more research on Muscular Dystrophy. If you are someone with out plans check out these events.

Memphis Music and Heritage Festival is a two-day yearly event that is on August 30-31 from 11AM - 11PM and is in the center of the downtown area (On Main Street). It is a 5 stage event that has so many acts to name that will entertain you. If you love to hear people tell stories about their lives or their craft, there is a long list of speakers for you to listen to. If dancing is something you love come watch people dance salsa, drum teams, Chinese, African, and more. If you are a beginning song writer you might want to check out one of the workshops for song writing. This event is so much fun if you are a music lover. The event is family friendly and there is things for the kids to enjoy also.

Zoo Brew at the Memphis Zoo is on August 29, 2008. This is one of the best taste testing of beers that you will find. There is over 30 brews to choose from. There will be food and wine to enjoy as you listen to music. Call the zoo for more details if you decide you would like to attend.
If you are a Redbird's fan check out the games that are at AutoZone Park on August 29,30, & 31. This is a great family outing. The game and the food is all you need.

As you can see there are a few things for you to do in Memphis, Tennessee on Labor Day in 2008. The important thing to do if you are lucky to be off is to relax and enjoy.
