Labor Day 2010 Closes Summer for Workers

Labor Day 2010 arrives to close out the summer. After Labor Day 2010, families will head back home, while those whom Labor Day honors will head right back to work. The holiday was created to give an extra day of rest for the nation's work force. Nowadays, those who are part of the work force need that break more than ever, while millions are struggling to get back in. Of course, as Labor Day 2010 begins, the holiday is known for a bit more than honoring workers.

These days, the first Monday of September is best known as the unofficial final day of summer. After record heat in many areas this summer, today is being met with milder temperatures. But it is still solid beach weather, after the weekend began with the shore fearing the worst.

For the East Coast, Labor Day 2010 may not be as big as they wanted, thanks to the hype over Hurricane Earl. Many tourist destinations on the coast evacuated tourists for fear that Hurricane Earl would strike them. However, the storm largely made little impact on the East Coast, although it probably put a dent into business this weekend.

Nevertheless, the Jersey Shore, Maryland, Cape Cod, and other East Coast getaways hope that Labor Day 2010 will bring a better end to the weekend. After that, they will go back into hibernation, as the tourists will bundle up for the beginning of fall and winter.

While families get their last summer barbeques in gear, there are fewer people who are actually being honored for their labor. Since 1882, this holiday was designed to honor the workers of America, but on Labor Day 2010, there aren't as many of them. Unemployment is still a national crisis, and many of those who are still working have decreased wages to survive on.

Other traditions are still being honored on this day, however. The annual Jerry Lewis telethon enters yet another year, while students enjoy their last free time before school starts, and sporting events like the US Open go on. College football has a big holiday showdown tonight between Boise State and Virginia Tech, while professional football is now less than a week away from starting again.

Following Labor Day 2010, the holiday season will take a bit of a break. However, with the summer all but ending today, there are certain to be ads for Halloween and Thanksgiving sales before long. In fact, there are probably a few early Christmas giveaways somewhere as well.

With one season over, another quickly stands on the horizon. Labor Day 2010 says farewell to the hot, cozy summer, before sending workers off to earn more for the winter holidays ahead.
