Labor Day Backyard Party Songs

The Songs You Wish You Had the Nerve to Sing to Your Boss!

J Budd, RN
As the economy remains in a slump, and many Americans remain unemployed, those who still have jobs find themselves doing more work for the same pay. That's why this Labor Day you should tell your boss to take a hike!

(Well you might not want to go that far, but at least enjoy your day off with songs that provide the perfect soundtrack for your Labor Day backyard party!)

9 To 5 by Dolly Parton

From the movie of the same title, this song is about the office worker who is barely getting by with no recognition from the boss. Dolly Parton may never have been a 9 to 5'er herself, but her song did a great job capturing that hamster in a wheel feeling in the workplace.

A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles

This Beatles song echoes the long hard work days (and nights) we put up with just to make a living. The bright spot about this song is that, at the end of the day, the singer gets to go home and be with the one he loves. One of the best songs to dance to at your Labor Day backyard party.

Take This Job and Shove It by Johnny Paycheck

Who doesn't dream about singing this song to their boss after a long work day? Johnny Paycheck's song has us sympathizing with a man who lost his woman because his job kept him away from her too much.

Bang The Drum All Day by Todd Rundgren

I don't want to work. I want to bang on the drum all day. It's just one of those novelty party songs that gets frequent airplay on rock stations especially on Fridays! At the end of the week, how many people do you know who would like to bang on a drum like it was their boss's head?

She Works Hard For The Money by Donna Summer

According to The Institute For Women's Policy Research, in 2008 the ratio of women's to men's median weekly earnings for full time workers was 79.9. Regardless what the socio-economic reasons are for this, Donna Summer's song only asks that you give these hard working women some respect.

Workin' For A Living by Huey Lewis and the News

Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Some people have to work for a living. So when your enjoying your Labor Day backyard party, just remember--you earned this!
