The website for the Royal Oak DDA, or Downtown Development Authority, states:

"Downtown Royal Oak brings it all together, creating an exciting place to shop, dine, play and reside. Nowhere else in metro Detroit will you find a greater concentration of award-winning boutiques, restaurants, salons, galleries and theatres. With many loft and high-rise apartment developments within walking distance and a growing mix of technology, creative, and professional service companies, Downtown Royal Oak is a place where you can truly live, work and play."

Leaders of the Royal Oak DDA won't have to preach much longer. Word is getting out.

The 13th annual Ford Arts, Beats & East Festival moved this year from Royal Oak to Pontiac and drew a record 360,000 attendance over the four-day Labor Day weekend. Thing were so crowded on Sunday night that organizers had to close the gates for a spell on Sunday night. They asked folks to wait to get in ... and the people were willing to wait!

Vendors were running out of food. Next year they will know to boost their supplies.

Ferndale has been getting plenty of props among Detroit suburbs with downtowns that are making comebacks, but Royal Oak is proving that it's second to none.
