Visit the City of Cowboys and Culture

Lauryn Page

Every year, Americans across the nation celebrate Labor Day. The first Monday in September wasn't a national holiday until June 28, 1894. However, this homage to American worker had been celebrated since 1882 in New York City by the Central Labor Union. The three-day weekend invites Americans to travel and get away for a moment of rejuvenation. While you're choosing your Labor Day travel spot, there is one in particular that any family will enjoy. Texas is cowboy country and there is no better example in existence than Historic Fort Worth. With popular attractions nearby and western atmosphere, Fort Worth warrants a visit during Labor Day. Located just seventeen miles from DFW Airport, Fort Worth has humble beginnings as an army outpost but over the past 150 years has transformed into a bustling, diverse city mingled with cowboy history.

Generally known for the Texas Rangers or Six Flags Over Texas, Fort Worth has other family fun attractions such as the Fort Worth Water Gardens. The variety of refreshing water fountains and the beautiful architecture is sure to entertain everyone. The Fort Worth Zoo is another destination the whole family will enjoy. Walk through the wild exhibits and experience the interactive exhibits such as Parrot Paradise where visitors are surrounded by colorful birds that will come and perch on their arms to be fed. No One can visit Fort Worth without experiencing authentic cowboy culture. The Stockyards National Historic District is an epicenter of western history. The Stockyards Museum allows visitors to explore the expansive history of Fort Worth and learn about its evolution into the "stock market of the West", dealing and shipping millions of cattle a year. When you're ready for some exciting nightlife, boot scoot over to Billy Bob's Texas, the "World's Largest Honky Tonk" and enjoy a country music performer rock the house. Chris Cagle is in concert on September 4 to help celebrate Labor Day weekend. General admission tickets are $12. Ready to wine and dine? Sundance Square is a 35 square block of shops and restaurants featuring the finest varieties of cuisine. Let your taste buds explore delicious foods and a little western hospitality. These are just a few of the reasons to choose Fort Worth, Texas for your Labor Day travel destination. Recharge your batteries with a true cowboy experience.
