Labor Day Fun: What to Do in 2007

Not Just the "Working Man's" Holiday Anymore

Mr. C
Most holidays cause excitement in children, but not all, kids cringe at the sound of the first Monday in September holiday, Labor Day. Why would they be upset at a day meant for rest? Because, while Dad might get off of work and be able to sit back and relax, for children it sounds the end of a care-free summer vacation.

Recently it has become more a day for finishing off school shopping than a time of leisure. So, let's try something different this summer. While some parents spend the day rushing their kids from store to store, why don't you give them some last-minute summer fun?

This article will give other parents out there some ideas on how to provide an enduring end to summer instead of a day trying on new jeans and picking out pens.

1. Check your local community websites, there are celebrations big and small spread throughout the U.S. These events range from firework displays, community barbecues and festivals. And, for the artistic, public art shows are plentiful.

2. Take a visit to the community pool or amusement park. That last splash will be a great way to end your child's summer. Remember to apply that sunscreen and bug spray to keep the day fun and not harmful

3. If you can't find a community event or park to visit, create one all your own. Weather permitting, a picnic would be a great way to end a fun filled summer. Or, throw a party and invite some of your kid's friends over to play sports, while the parents relax on the patio sipping lemonade.

4. If your adventurous side is calling to you, use it as a way to travel beyond your local community. Travel out into the wilderness and have a day hiking and camping. Hve a full fledged vacation and head to the beach for the day.

5. If you have teenagers let them invite some friends over for a controlled party, instead of forcing them to clean out the gutters.

6. If your area has a the weather blues, have a family movie night, with some popcorn and pop, or play board games. Tell each other stories and reminisce about a fun filled summer.

Started in 1882, Labor Day was created to give a day off to the "working man." With these ideas and ones you create on your own you can turn this September 3rd celebration into a fun day for the "playful child."
