Labor Day Recipe: Vegetarian Sausage Burgers with Spicy Mayo

Perfect for Labor Day or Any Grillin' Type Day.

Another recipe from my old foodie blog. Perfect for Labor Day or any grillin' type day. Can even be made ahead by a day or so. The mock brand of the meats used, Gimme Lean, can be found at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and some other major grocers. It's much lower in fat and my family said they could barely tell it wasn't "real". This is also great for family bar-b-ques because it can make 4 large burger patties or 8 small. Plus, if you use Veganaise (which is freakin' delish, btw) and either leave off the cheese or use vegan mock cheese, then it's, of course, completely vegan.

Spicy mayonnaise
3/4 cup light mayonnaise (or Veganaise)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Cajun or Creole seasoning blend
1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

Burgers
1 package Gimme Lean ground sausage-style
1 package Gimme Lean ground beef-style
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Burger Buns (try whole grain for added health benefits)

Toppings (optional)
crumbled blue cheese (or sliced swiss or cheddar)
tomato
onion
lettuce

Preparation

For mayonnaise: Mix all ingredients in small bowl. Cover and chill.

Do ahead: Can be made 2 days ahead. Keep chilled.

For burgers: Toss all 4 ingredients in large bowl and blend with hands. Shape mixture into patties. Coat a large skillet or grill with cooking spray and grill burgers until browning on both sides, about 3 minutes per side.

Do ahead: Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill.
