Labor Day Travel on a Shoestring

Gayle Crabtree

A sluggish economy doesn't have to derail your Labor Day vacation this year. Shoestring travel can make it possible for your family to enjoy a fun filled weekend getaway. The AAA automobile club is projecting that fewer travelers will hit the road this year. Projections made by the club are indicating that despite the decrease over 30 million travelers will hit the roads over Labor Day weekend. The good news is that you can be one of them.

My family has successfully traveled on a dime for years. Shoestring travel isn't about giving up fun. It's about choosing your destination and spending wisely so your family can have a Labor Day vacation.

Coupons can cut costs of Labor Day travel. Books of hotel coupon are usually available at rest areas or welcome centers. These free books can help you save up to 50% off advertised hotel room rates. The coupons are usually on valid for the stated location. A quick phone call can tell you if the spot is going to be convenient for you.

Taking advantage of weekend rates can boost your Labor Day travel plans. Hotels in cities like Washington, DC may offer their best prices on the weekend. Check online travel sites for price comparisons.

Consider a museum themed vacation instead of a theme park. Almost every city has a museum or attraction that are free or nearly so. Visitors can explore the Parthenon in Nashville and the grounds of the St. Louis Arch without dropping a bucketload of cash.

Even theme parks have their specials that can put your Labor Day travel back on track. The Dollywood theme park in Tennessee allows guests who arrive after 3:00 pm to come again the next day for free. Special deals may be found on soft drink cans or in fast food restaurants. Check the website for the park you want to visit or call them to ask.

Shoestring trips for Labor Day can also include day trips. Avoid staying in a hotel by staying at home. This type of shoestring travel can open your eyes to other day trip opportunities. You never know what you will find in your own backyard.

Food is one travel expense that you can control. Pack sandwiches for a picnic in the park or toss a full meal in the car to grill along the way. Are the thoughts of a full picnic too much hassle for you? Toss a few bottles of water and some snacks in the car. They will help you save money and the convenience will help you enjoy Labor Day travel on a shoestring.
