About 58% of Americans say the national economy is getting worse. In the small city in Wisconsin that I live in, I can say that I see financial struggles for many. The real estate market is pathetic. Jobs are very hard to come by. It's hard for much of the population to make ends meet.

This coming Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, I'm sure those who are fortunate enough to have an adequate work station will gratefully celebrate this day. Many will even work on this day. This holiday for workers was first proposed over 100 years ago. Everyone's job is important. It takes the contribution of all workers in order to have economic well-being. This day is not devoted to a certain person, race, or sect. Instead, it's dedicated to the economic achievements of American workers.

There is some argument about who started Labor Day. Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners was said to be this individual. This has been challenged by those who believe Matthew Maguire, a machinist, founded the holiday.

What we do know, is that the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. In 1884 the first Monday in September was chosen as the holiday. This was the workingmen's holiday. As time went on, more and more states adapted the holiday until the whole nation took part in the celebration. The American worker gives this nation the strength and leadership that we have. It's good to recognize and pay tribute to working America.

The big event over the Labor Day weekend in Shawano, WI will be the Shawano County Fair. The first day of the fair will be August 29th. This will go on through September 3. Taking place in the grandstand will be events such as the county farm tractor pull, a demolition derby, stock car races, and pig wrestling. Music will include the Mr. Slate Band, Arly Bork Band, KNX Pary Band, Mark Jirkovec Orchestra, and Chad Przbylski and the Polka Rhythms. On Sunday, Jerry Voelker and Father Hafeman will hold a Polka Mass at 11:00 AM. Jerry Voelker Orchestra will perform as well as the Alvin Styczynski Orchestra. Fred Beyer will be at the piano on Monday, September 3 from 12-3 PM. Free entertainment under the grandstand includes the Mike and Brian Show, The Chicago Honey Bear Dancers, the Wolf River Band, and a Center Stage Variety Show Band.

Other activities held will be the Kid's Pedal Pull, pony rides, a livestock auction, and an awards program. There are several rides on the midway. Go through the barns full of farm animals and see those that are judged and awarded ribbons. Many community youngsters participate in bringing in their animals for these events. Other family involvement projects are on display within the fair ground buildings such as arts and crafts. This is a fun way to spend time with your family over the Labor Day weekend.

As you can see, Labor "Day" has evolved into an end of summer festival that lasts several days long for many communities. Don't forget the significance of Labor Day. Whatever our employment, we all play a big role in the success of our nation. Even when things occur that cause our economy to decline, these things don't mean that we all don't work hard in one way or another to make our lives and the lives of those around us better. Whatever your job, know that you are important.
