Labor Day New York City 2009

J Budd, RN
The first official Labor Day holiday took place in New York City in 1882. Over 100 years later, New York City continues to celebrate the working men and women of America while getting in one last fun filled weekend before the summer ends.

There is a reason New York City is called the city that never sleeps. Even a holiday like Labor Day can't slow down the bustle of this metropolitan mecca. If you are going to be in New York City around Labor Day, here's a guide what's going on in the Big Apple.

Labor Day New York City 2009: Labor Day Parade, Manhattan September 12, 2009

Yes, that's the Saturday after Labor Day, but who cares? This annual event kicks off at 10am at 5th Avenue and 44th Street. The parade route travels north on 5th Avenue and ends at 72nd Street near Central Park. Get there early for a choice standing spot and try to use mass transit when heading to and from the event (Grand Central Terminal is nearby.)

Labor Day New York City 2009: The West Indian Day Parade, Brooklyn September 7, 2009

Celebrating its 42nd year, the West Indian Day Parade begins at Rochester Avenue and Eastern Parkway and ends at Grand Army Plaza. See live performers and sample traditional foods from countries like Trinidad, Grenada, and Barbados. The festivities take place from 11am-7pm.

Labor Day New York City 2009: Yankees and Mets baseball

The boys of summer won't be getting time off as the baseball season winds down in September. The Mets are hosting the Chicago Cubs for three games at the new Citi Field Stadium in Queens from Friday September 4th to Sunday September 6h. And the Bronx Bomber Yankees host a double header with Tampa Bay Rays on Labor Day September 7th beginning at 1:05pm. Best subways for the games: Mets-the 7 train. Yankees-D or 4 trains.

Labor Day New York City 2009: Broadway Shows on the Great White Way in Manhattan

You can't come to New York City without seeing a Broadway play! Get tickets to recent Tony Award winning plays like Billy Elliot and Hair. Also playing: 9 to 5 The Musical (music by Dolly Parton), Mary Poppins, and Jersey Boys. Tickets can be bought at theater box offices, Broadway.com, or at TKTS in Times Square, South Street Seaport (Manhattan) and Downtown Brooklyn. Many shows are 'dark' on Mondays, so check with the box office for more details.
