David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly
Director: Jim Henson
Labyrinth encapsulates 80's pop culture and style in a fantasy pop musical complete with Muppets and characters created by Jim Henson. David Bowie sings and plays the villain, the Goblin King. Several fun production numbers showcase catchy songs. Jim Henson includes classic fairy tale elements (a child kidnapped by fairies, a magical quest) in the story he wrote along with Dennis Lee.
Jennifer Connelly plays Sarah, a teenager stuck babysitting her baby brother. She resents him and is jealous. The Goblin King steals the child away and hides him in the center of his tricky and treacherous labyrinth. Sarah must find her way through to rescue her baby brother before midnight. If she fails, the boy will turn into a goblin and can never return to the regular world.
The characters and special effects fully realize the imaginative world of Labyrinth. Jim Henson created wonderful creatures and brought them to life with seamless puppetry. Hoggle, a Muppet character performed by Shari Weiser and Brian Henson, plays the main supporting role with significant acting responsibility. David Bowie's Goblin King costume and performance is a mixture of 70's glam rock and early Goth.
Labyrinth is a rare movie that entertains the whole family. It is rated PG and contains scenes that may frighten young children. There are also a couple of mild swear words (damn and hell). Exciting action, music, and weird characters delight older children and are cool enough for adults. The humor appeals to teens and adults. Because of the skillful blend of spookiness, fantasy, comedy, and pop-icon coolness, Labyrinth has won a cult following.

Post a CommentOne of my favorite movies of all time. Connolly's first I think, and yes, it's all about Bowie and Ludo and Sir Jitimas (sp?) and his loyal steed. Favorite scenes: "She said down!" And "No good, *snuff* I can't hear you." And of course the Bog of Eternal Stinch! If you like Labyrinth, you'll probably like Dark Crystal, too- another Jim Henson masterpiece.
I not only love the movie, but at age five, it was all about Bowie for me. lol :)
I loved that movie. In fact, I enjoyed it more than my kids did.
I remember this film! It was something of a cult hit back in my grade school days... mostly because everyone was in love with the beautiful Connolly! ;o)
