First, let's start with the basics. Lacrosse has its origins in the Native American community. In involves a small rubber ball and a racket, called a lacrosse stick. The stick has a mesh netting to which can hold the lacrosse ball.
The object of the game is to catch the lacrosse ball, carry, pass it and shoot it into the other team's goal. If you're on defense, the objective it to stop the other team for scoring on you as well as lose possession of the lacrosse ball.
One thing you should know about lacrosse is that it's a physically demanding sport. You have to be skilled with using the lacrosse stick so it does take some practice to get used to. In the men's version of lacrosse there are ten players on the field from each team. So there are a lot of people to contend with if you're the one holding the ball.
Here's a break down of the team player lineup: a goalkeeper, three midfielders, three defenders and three attackers. Each of these players carries a lacrosse stick. Some carry short sticks while four can carry long sticks, known as a long crosse. The lacrosse field is 110 yards long.
Now that it's time for lacrosse practice, the first thing you'll want to learn how to do when learning how to play lacrosse is learn how to cradle the ball. The better you are at it, the better you'll be able to get past all of the defensive players on the field out to knock the ball out of your stick. Practice moving around and keeping the ball steady in your lacrosse stick.
Learn how to pass. You'll want to grab a friend that also plays lacrosse and practice passing the lacrosse ball to each other. If you're practicing alone, use a wall to bounce the ball and in essence pass to yourself.
The above step will also translate into you learning how to catch the ball without dropping it. Practice using both hands on the stick when you cradle, pass and catch. This will ensure a steady lacrosse performance.
