Lacy Bridal Garter Crochet Pattern

Phebe A. Durand
When a friend or loved one is about to be a bride, you just know you have to come up with something special for her big day. As tradition goes, the bridal garter is an old one - but will be just as touching when it comes from your heart, all lacy and tied up with a pretty bow.

This is an extremely easy crochet pattern, even though it uses crochet thread. As long as you've got the basic stitches down (slip stitch, chain, single crochet, and double crochet) you're set. It uses a repeated pattern stitch called an "Iris Stitch" for most of the body, and the pretty open shells at the bottom are done in nothing but single crochet.

Materials

Size 3/2.10 MM Aluminum Crochet Hook
Size 10 Crochet Thread in color of choice
Small amount of 1/4" wide ribbon

Ch = Chain
Sl St = Slip Stitch
Sc = Single Crochet
Dc = Double Crochet
Trc = Triple Crochet

Bridal Garter Crochet Pattern

Foundation Chain: Measure the width of the bride's leg at the point the bride desires the garter to be worn. If you don't want to ruin the surprise by having to do this, try using part of your own leg at the point where it looks about right, and when tying the ribbon, leave an extra long length for tightening. Either way, chain to the measurement you've taken, plus 1/2 inch. So if the measurement of the leg is 10", chain to 10 1/2". Make sure that the number of chains is an even number (10, 14, 20, 36, etc). Join to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.

Weave 1/4" ribbon through the trc spaces made in round 3. Tie in a bow at front, and cut the ends of the ribbon at angles to resist fraying.

  • Use the accent color of bride's theme for the garter, and the main color for the ribbon.
  • Cut the ribbon at angles to resist fraying.
  • Try adding a pretty charm to the space below the ribbon for a nice touch.
