Ladies Fashion Trend Predictions for 2010

Lori Jill Shirley
I am all about 'fashion forward'. My friends and family can literally attest to the fact that I was always the 'first one' to wear this or that particular style or trend before it became mainstream. My love of indie designers and offbeat fashion magazines and websites gives me an inside scoop on what is currently in demand and what are destined to become major fashion trends. Here is my list of ladies fashion trend predictions for 2010.

Feathers, Feathers, and More Feathers!

Feathers are going to be big this year. Handmade feather earrings are a hot seller on the popular crafting website etsy, with the most popular being ones made of peacock feathers. Feather prints on dresses and t-shirts are also making a buzz, and THE thing to wear in your hair for special events or a night on the town this year is a fascinator. These fun, girly hair accessories are all the rage in Europe and they are making their way into mainstream US fashion with a vengeance. Fascinators are also sold on etsy, and they come in assorted styles ranging from a simple hairclip with just a few feathers (such as I'm wearing in the picture) to very elaborate headbands, complete with flowers and veils.

Pin-Up Shorts

We've seen these on celebs such as Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera in recent years, but be prepared to see more and more young ladies out at the mall this year in fancy, short-shorts with pinstripes and stockings and chunky heels. These are a popular seller on Modcloth and they also look great with fitted blazers and ballet flats as well. Just some advice, you really have to carry yourself like a pin-up girl to get away with this look, so hold your head up high and act like you own the world if you venture into the world of pin-up shorts!

Fly Away Cardigans and Tops

These are going to be hot this spring. Fly-away or 'floating' style blouses and tops are fitted and have floaty sleeves in a 'batwing' style. The long, flowing effect that the sleeves have on these tops literally makes you look like you are about to take flight, hence their name. Fly-away style cardigans are just simple cardigans that are loose and open in the front without any buttons. These look great with simple camisoles with a large bangle cuff to accessorize and are ideal for wearing at the office. Express.com has quite a few for sale in fun colors.

Early 90s Throwback Look

We saw a resurgence of 80s fashion in the 2000s, now the early 90s are going to have their turn. Looks that were popular in the early 1990s that are making a comeback this year are large oversized blazers, floral print mini dresses, chunky high heels, patterned tights, and flannel prints. Think back to Beverly Hills 90210 the Brenda Walsh years, or a young Mariah Carey before her glitzy era. Simple, yet elegant looks accentuated by a few flashy accessories and Earth tones are going to be the rage.

Sequins and Lace

For evening looks this year, pretty dresses embellished with sequins and lace will be seen at many parties and elegant affairs. A plain black dress with a fitted, sequined cardigan will be a very popular choice as well, and ladies, pantyhose and stockings are going to be the rage once again. Popular accessories for evening looks this year will be sequined clutch style purses, lace stockings, flashy gold jewelry, and of course hair fascinators.

These are just a few of the trends that are making a buzz in the fashion world that are destined to become huge in 2010. Just incorporating one or two of these trends into your style will instantly update your look and make you two steps ahead of everyone else. Thus concludes my fashion forecast for 2010!
