Ladies' Market (Tung Choi Street) and Men's Market (Temple Street) in Hong Kong Offer Cheap Bargains for Both Sexes
One of the Pleasures of a Shopping Trip to Hong Kong, for Men and Women, is Buying Bargains at These Markets
On my trips to Hong Kong, I always make time to shop at the city's many markets. Two of the best markets, if you're looking for items specifically for men or for women, are Ladies' Market or 'Tung Choi Street Market' and Men's Market, also known as 'Temple Street Market'. While both markets sell things for both sexes (and for kids too!), they specialize in products for one of the two sexes, seriously cutting down the time necessary to find what you need. Prices are cheap too.
Where are Ladies' Market and Men's Market - Easily accessible with Hong Kong's public transportation system, you can get to Ladies' Market (Tung Choi Street Market) with Hong Kong's rapid transit railway system (MTR). Just catch the train to Mong Kok station, and take the Nelson Street exit. You'll find Ladies' Market after a two block walk.
As for Men's Market (Temple Street Market), take the MTR to Jordan Road station. Exit the station at Exit A, and take a right onto Jordan Road. At Temple Street - take another right, and you'll see the market immediately.
What to Buy at Ladies' Market
Street vendors at Ladies' Market sell everything for women from clothing (both casual and more office-style pieces) to shoes, bags, wallets, belts, scarves, shawls, make-up and perfume. You'll also find lots of costume jewelry and even some childrens' clothing and toys.
Look out for silk scarves and shawls. Perfect to wear to brighten up a plain shirt, or to jazz up a day outfit for evening, silk scarves can be bought for as little as $4-5 and shawls for $8-10. With the pretty designs and bright colors, they're a wonderful (and lightweight) gift to take for friends back home.
T-shirts are also in abundance, with styles ranging from cute and fashionable to hard rock and heavy metal. Bags and purses too are an excellent buy. The last time I shopped at Ladies' Market I bought a cute green fashion shoulder bag to match my favorite sweater for only $10 dollars.
Some men's fashions are also on sale here. Look particularly for silk ties and for Formula 1 and football t shirts and jackets. As for kids, the traditional Chinese shirts, dresses and jackets are cute. You can even buy tiny Chinese dragon jackets for baby.
What to Buy at Men's Market
On my first visit to Men's Market (Temple Street Market), I immediately recognized it from numerous Chinese movies that have been filmed there. Specializing in men's clothing, accessories and odds and ends (lighters, leather belts, cigarette holders, business card holders etc), it's one of the most popular places in Hong Kong for men who want to stay fashionable.
Look for great bargains on t shirts, sports shirts and dress shirts. There's a good selection of men's shorts, jeans and khakis here too, as well as belts to go with them (check out the stalls selling fancy belt buckles, which you can buy separately to add to a favorite belt).
For accessories, lighters are in abundance at Men's Market with designs of Chinese and Western movie stars, naked girls, Harley Davidson motorbikes, heavy metal, Second World War and much more. Travel flashlights are also a good buy, as are keyrings, mini tool kits and even items like batteries, and condoms (just make sure you get the larger sizes, as Asian condoms are small compared to those from the west - I kid you not).
As this is a night market, you'll also find lots of incredible street food. Don't miss sampling the seafood in particular. It's cheap, fresh and extremely delicious.
What are Operating Hours for Ladies' Market and Men's Market?
Ladies' Market opens just before noon and runs throughout the day until around 11:30pm. Best time to shop, if you prefer less crowds, is after the lunch crush and before the early evening rush starts.
Men's Market, as a traditional night market, doesn't open until 4pm but then stays open until midnight.
Why not start off your day with shopping at Ladies' Market, then lunch at one of the many restaurants nearby. Then head off to Men's Market for more shopping, a cheap dinner, and a couple of beers. You couldn't ask for a better (and cheaper) Hong Kong shopping experience.
