What Does the Lady Gaga Hermaphrodite Picture Tell Us?

A picture from and a video of Lady Gaga's "Money Honey" is circulating the internet purported to offer visual proof that Lady Gaga is indeed an hermaphrodite. The picture, which is taken from a live video, seems to show a bit more of Lady Gaga than was intended (she keeps pulling down her mini-dress throughout the video), but 1:10 into the footage and there is a brief (and that's probably exactly what it is) flash of something that some are claiming is a male member and proof that the popular singer is a hermaphrodite. The video (and its pulled still picture) has added to a persistent rumor running the internet that Lady Gaga is indeed a hermaphrodite. The rumors have been prevalent for awhile, building on Lady Gaga's somewhat masculine facial features and her decidedly un-feminine walking style. But the internet world being the end-all of ultimate proof that it is, now has any number of websites, like The Hollywood Gossip, with the video evidence that the rumors are true, that Lady Gaga has all along been a hermaphrodite, and that the world need wonder no longer.

As if anyone but the childish cared to begin with...

The matter of Lady Gaga's sex or gender (or the presence of both) should be the least of most people's worries, what with the Great Recession upon the world, a destabilized Middle East, and two pandemics encompassing the globe. But apparently people must have their distractions and ascertaining/discovering through video or pictorial evidence whether or not Lady Gaga, the latest flamboyant pop superstar, is a male or a female -- or both -- constitutes such. That the singer has had no problem taunting the mean-spirited and the childishly curious by remaining mum on the subject is either a stroke of promotional genius (always keep them guessing) or the pop star believes that acknowledging the rumors are beneath her. Or both.

But in the "Money Honey" video, Lady Gaga steps away from a small motor scooter that she had been laying on. Seeming to "adjust" herself (himself, itself some are prompting) as she gets up from the bike, Lady Gaga steps to the side and a bit of her private area is shown. Although there is nothing conclusive about what is seen -- a male member, as some suggest, or just a flash of underwear, which is more likely the case -- there is no doubt that the area revealed by the too-short and climbing red mini-dress is, well, revealed. But is it proof that Lady Gaga is a hermaphrodite?

The answer to that is a resounding "no." As stated, the brief visual might just be her underwear, a wardrobe malfunction. And even if it is a male member, that does not necessarily mean that Lady Gaga is a hermaphrodite, picture or no. There are many transgender and cross-dressing individuals in the world, so assuming that simply because someone who has breasts and a penis is a hermaphrodite shows a certain ignorance.

Not that any of it really matters.

Would Lady Gaga's songs sound any different because of the gained knowledge? Would picture evidence that she was a she or a he or a hermaphrodite detract from the person as a performer? Would Lady Gaga be any different? No, she would not.

But the perspective of the beholder might be altered, and with society's historical intolerance and general ignorance of and toward the sexually different (in all its forms), it could cost the singer in the long run if it is found that she is a hermaphrodite. But it must be asked: Does it really matter? If one is not a fan, why should one care about Lady Gaga's sexuality? If one is a fan, why should one care about Lady Gaga's sexuality? What does this need to know say about those who feel a need to know? In the end, Lady Gaga's sexuality is no one's business but her own, regardless of whether or not one likes or dislikes her music, performance style, vocal stylings, etc.

People see what they want to see. They believe what they want to believe. But the picture and video are not conclusive in the least, so the mystery remains.

Is Lady Gaga a woman or a man? Or both? And what difference does it make anyway?
