Lady Gaga Passes 10 Million Followers on Twitter

Lady Gaga is now the first person to have 10 million followers on Twitter. She has had the most followers on Twitter for a little while now, working hard at staying just ahead of Justin Bieber. It's definitely a badge of honor in the online world of today, and it's even more remarkable that so many people want to keep up with what she is doing.

According to Twitaholic.com, Lady Gaga made it to 10,021,477 followers as of today. Those numbers put her about 360,000 followers ahead of Bieber, but more than 2 million followers ahead of the third most popular Twitter user.

To put things into even more perspective, there are only 14 people who have passed the 5 million threshold in followers, and one of those is the Twitter website itself. This has become a pretty big deal on the Internet, and has even led to contests between fellow users. One such that made a lot of news was CNN vs. Ashton Kutcher, where a competition was held to determine which user could reach 1 million followers first.

Some may write off Twitter as a website that is a whole bunch of people shouting but nobody listening, but when it comes to celebrities, they seem to exist on a different playing field. Many of these most-followed celebrities will post daily on what they are up to, with several giving several posts during the day. It has become "fun" to follow them and see what they have to say next, and it has led to even more buzz surrounding people like Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Ellen DeGeneres.

President Barack Obama has even taken to the Twitter universe with a bold move, and he was one of the first celebrities out there to really become popular on the website. In addition to having more than 8 million followers and ranking No. 3 on the overall list, he has also been on Twitter for 51 months. His length of time on the site is a year longer than Lady Gaga, and two years longer than Bieber. This could also point toward Twitter getting used for more political announcements in the near future.

The debate about whether Twitter is just a fad has started to take a backseat as many in Hollywood, politics, and even the fashion industry have started to find value in the website. Getting followers has become the newest form of "friending" people on the internet, and it is probably here to stay. As for Gaga, it seems like her number of fans is ever increasing and that she could be approaching 15 million followers by this time next year.
