Lady Gaga's VMA Meat Dress to Become Beef Jerky

Whether Lady Gaga's VMA meat gown left you gaga or gagging, it still brought one big question to everyone's mind: What's going to happen to the perishable dress afterward? Well, People magazine reports that it's been sentenced to spend the remainder of its life as beef jerky.

But don't expect to see a Gaga-Brand jerky coming to a gas station near you. It's only being jerkified for preservation purposes, according to Franc Fernandez, the dress's designer who spent three days working with 50 pounds of beef, refrigerating in between to preserve freshness, to bring this gown to life.

So the dress, will be dried, "archived", and never worn again. And if you found that news disheartening, don't expect Gaga to wear any more steak creations any time soon. Fernandez told MTV Style, "There's not going to be meat dresses in the future. This was made for a specific purpose. It's what it is."

To get everyone on up date, during the September 12, 2010, MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga, known for her unique and often over-the-top fashion sense, sported a controversial dress made entirely of beef. No, beef isn't a new hip term in the fashion world. We're talking barbeque quality stuff.

As you can imagine, the outfit sparked a wave of outrage from animal rights activists, vegans and vegetarians, and people who think wearing meat is generally "eww." But amidst all the haters, many applauded the outfit as an artistic and fashionable expression with a real message. Personally, while I wouldn't describe myself as offended, the message was lost on me. I was too busy thinking "Is that a steak on her head?" to catch anything else.

Since my later interpretations all seemed weak, I decided to go to the source. Lady Gaga sat down with Ellen DeGeneres during the season 8 premiere of The Ellen DeGeneresShow and explained the motivation behind her rare-cooked robe:

"Well, it's certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. I, as you know, am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening, if we don't stand up for what we believe in, if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones."

Ellen then offered Lady Gaga a vegan-friendly lettuce bikini alternative for future use, a fine choice on Ellen's part that Gaga should take into consideration.

    I think the dress was cool, albeit gross, but still interesting all the same. It's Gaga- what else could we expect??

    There is fashion, and then there is the ridiculous, and Gaga makes me want to Gag with some of her weird antice. But some people will do anything for publicity these days I suppose. Sooner or later though daft things like this come back to bite you.

    Lol, I love Ellen. When I saw the dress I was gagging, totally. But then like 90% of my content is vegetarian-related, so you can probably guess why ;). Great article! It definitely cleared up the confusion. Also, sorry I haven't been around in a while. Just completed my move to Tokyo x.x;;

    I think the dress was a little weird. However, I do like Lady Gaga because she is always willing to set herself apart from the rest of the world. She is one person that truly doesnt care waht people think of her. I applaud her for that. Great article ZJ =0)
