Lake County Teen Charged in Leroy Township Shooting

An 18-year-old Leroy Township teen used a handgun and shotgun to shoot at his neighbors' homes and vehicles, according to Lake County Sheriff Dan Dunlap. No one was injured during the shooting spree but the gunman, Dylan McDivitt, of Brakeman Road, has been charged with multiple felony counts.

"This incident occurred over unrequited love you might say," Dunlap said, "and the two young ladies living at the homes know Dylan well. They helped with this investigation."

The incident began on May 15 at about 3 a.m. when residents at two different Brakeman Road homes called to report they heard gunshots, and their vehicles and homes were damaged.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office began investigating and were able to locate several witnesses that assisted in identifying the suspect.

As a result of that investigation, a search warrant was obtained and executed at McDivitt's home on May 18. A search warrant was also obtained to collect McDivitt's DNA. According to a press release, McDivitt admitted to his involvement in the shootings.

As a result, McDivitt was arrested and charged with two felony second-degree counts of improperly discharging a firearm, two felony fifth-degree counts of vandalism, and two misdemeanor first-degree counts of aggravated menacing. The menacing charges resulted because McDivitt left a threatening note at one of the homes, Dunlap said. The note bore the same clown logo which McDivitt has tattooed on his leg. According to Painesville Municipal Court records, McDivitt was released on $5,000 cash bond on May 20. If found guilty on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years.

An investigation is on-going as sheriff deputies determine if another individual was involved.
