Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is no doubt a resort town just north of Chicago, Illinois. It shows off old money in the architecture, the boats in the marina, and the quaint, yet pricey charm. I opted, however, to do the cheap version of Lake Geneva by camping in the only tent-available campground in Lake Geneva: Big Foot Beach State Park located just across the street from the lake.

The state park itself was quaint, with small primitive shower facilities, tables with a fire ring, and nice trees that provide shade on your campsite. It's an easy walk to a rocky beach where you can dip your toes in the cool water of the Lake and take in the million dollar yachts surrounding you.

When the sun was beating down, I headed to Kilwin's, known as Lake Geneva's premier sweet shop. They offered great ice cream, and a lovely setting right by the marina. You can stroll the paved and manicured walking trails along the waterways. At nighttime, the lights around the harbor are absolutely breathtaking.

Lake Geneva is especially known for its shopping. There are many quaint stores offering everything from wine, cheese and home decorations to an array of antiques. Don't expect to find chain stores, as Lake Geneva is home to many small businesses that are locally owned and supported.

With just under 10,000 people (City Data), Lake Geneva is a small town located just about 30 miles from Lake Michigan and was once home to a Playboy Club (Lake Geneva Tourism) which is now the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa. If you're interested in a quaint getaway, that has a bit of class, consider traveling to Lake Geneva.
