Lake George Winter Carnival - a Must See Event

Adirondack Mountains

Mag Inzire
It's that time of year when Upstate New Yorkers take advantage of the magnificent wintry weather. Aside from all the beauty that surrounds the Adirondack region during the winter months there are several special events hosted during this time as well, to help in celebrating one of Mother Nature's spectacular miracles.

The Lake George Winter Carnival is one of the main events hosted during the cold blistery month of February. But prior to the kick off of this annual event there is the Lake George Polar Plunge which has been a popular tradition for years, occurring on first day of January in Lake George and this marks the kick-off of each year's Winter Carnival, which runs through the end of February. During this event hundreds of people gather for a New Years Day swim where the waters are frigid and barely above freezing temperatures. But the crowd is numerous and excited every year to take part in this spectacular event. And then the weekends in February will become winter carnival time in the village of Lake George, NY.

The carnival is hosted right on the frozen waters of Lake George where there are snowmobile rides and ATV races. It really is a sight to see. The wondrous mountains surround you as you walk on a glistening body of iced water where in just a few months it will soon be turned back into an array of warm swimming water. However, during the winter months in Lake George there are still the bravest that will venture out and take a swim in the coldest parts of the unfrozen lake for their annual polar plunge.

There are many activities planned out during the month that include outhouse races, flag football, giant ice slides and several types of great cooking. There are also numerous children activities hosted throughout this event. The kids can play on the giant ice slide, enjoy a hot air balloon ride and even take a snowmobile sleigh ride. There are numerous shows to watch including a Mardi Gras Parade and a fireworks display. Activities are many that will suit the young and old as well as the cold and warm.

Finally, as the annual Lake George winter carnival starts to wind down there is a snowmobile raffle drawing, in which I might add that my own brother in law happened to win during the winter carnival of 2007. And boy was he excited as can be. I definitely recommend all to take part of this once in a lifetime must see event. It is a great way to spend a family vacation without having to spend a lot and yet be able to do plentiful.
