Lake Tahoe Holiday Festivites Start with Snow

Early Snowfall Spurs Holiday Planning

Nolan O'Brian
A white Christmas is really something to celebrate in the Lake Tahoe/Truckee area. When up to half your annual business may depend on the Christmas-New Year holidays, an ample supply of snow is truly something to rejoice about.

Boreal Ski Resort on Donner summit kicked things off first, with their earliest October opening-date ever. Then, Wednesday night mother nature blanketed the region with 4-7 inches of snow, and the mood-change was palpable.

At Tahoe-Donner in Truckee (north of Tahoe) a Tree-Lighting and Live music event complete with marshmallows is scheduled to light up the Main Lodge from 5-8pm on November 28.

On December 3, Northstar Ski Resort will light it's tree, and it's Noel Nights will continue every Thursday evening with ice skating, Santa visits and caroling.

At South Lake Tahoe old-country European sleighrides are available, and for more contemporary entertainment Harrah's Lake Tahoe offers Al Jarreau, Neil Sedaka, Foghat and more.

Squaw Valley USA celebrates its 60th season, and the 50th anniversary of the 1960 Olympics, with a Squawlidays lineup of special events including the 17th annual Snow Gods Ball December 17.

At Mount Rose Ski area, ski in a Santa costume, or dressed as an elf on December 12, and receive a discount lift ticket.

If the early arrival of snow is any indication, it's going to be a very merry holiday season at Lake Tahoe, California...and not just for skiiers and boarders... there are family events and entertainment choices for all.

Thanks for this. I wish we were in a better financial situation to have a white Christmas in the mountains. Nonetheless, you have provided some hopes for the near future. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family Nolan. : - )
