Laminate Flooring: A Great Choice for the Do it Yourselfer on a Budget

Eric Loveday
When it comes time to tackle a home improvement project around your house, some jobs are easy do it yourself projects while others are best left to the professionals. Sometimes, deciding what can be done by you is not an easy choice. Many homeowners become overly ambitious and attempt home improvement projects that they quickly realize are over their heads. In this situation, you are left with a half completed project that will then require the help of a professional to see the project through to its completion.

It is not always easy to determine which tasks you can accomplish on your own. But some projects are so simple that they just call out to you to give it a try. A great example is installing flooring. If you need to replace flooring in an area of your home, some choices are professional only options. For example installing carpet, or linoleum, or even tile in large rooms of your home can be a complicated project typically requiring professional help. But there is one flooring option that is simple enough that most any homeowner should attempt to save some money and install it themselves. This option is laminate flooring.

It used to be that laminate flooring had to be laid down, glued together, and typically glued to the subfloor. This was time consuming and difficult, but today's laminates are just a click away from installation.

The choices in laminate flooring are nearly endless. You can buy laminate flooring that mimics almost any type of hardwood flooring. There is laminate flooring that looks like several types of different tile including ceramic and real stone such as slate, granite, and marble. There is also unique laminate flooring that mimics cork, bamboo, and so on.

People are drawn to laminate flooring for its durability, low price, and ease of install. But it's truly the ease of install that makes it a homeowner dream. To install laminate flooring, you simply lay down sheets of underlayment which insulate and cushion the flooring, and then you cut your strip to length, lay them in position, line up the edges, and snap them into place. The only cuts required are cutting the boards to length and this can be done without power tools, but a cutoff saw does makes the task easier.

A laminate floor is beautiful and durable, but if it does require replacement, removal is even easier than installing. To remove, you simply lift the floor up and break it into manageable sections. The floor is not attached directly to the subfloor, it merely floats on the underlayment making removal a simple task.

As mentioned before, some projects around the home are simple do it yourself task while others are best left for professionals. The task of installing a laminate floor is as easy as they come and a great project for the first time do it yourselfer.

Best of all, laminate flooring will last for many years, it's a budget friendly flooring option, and available in a wide variety of choices to fit any budget and to fit into your home décor.
