Lancaster County, Pennsylvania: Weird Names of Small Towns

A Fun Factual Tour of Lancaster County

Artisttia Yarns
About 20 years ago, I moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster County is one of the most interesting, beautiful and places on earth. Please take note of the names of some of the towns and places of interest on this virtual tour. If you do, you'll know that you'll never see Bored here (hint: it isn't located in Pennsylvania). Of geographic note, "You can (get) to any point within Lancaster County {Pennsylvania] in about an hour or less."

Let the exploration begin:

Starting towards the Northern end of the County is Falmouth, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The very name, Falmouth makes me wonder about the mouths on the people living there. But I digress continuing East, its time to work your way over from there to get to Mount Joy. It has rolling hills, interesting valleys and panoramic vistas.

Being so close to Lebanon County take a bit of a side trip, there's a place there you won't want to miss. So head down the road, over the line take Pinch Road to the park. Then you will arrive at, Governor Dick. I kid you not; the formal name of the park is Governor Dick. It was named for a husky forester, whose name was "Dick"; however, his friends nicked named him, "Governor". It was a popular nickname for people in the 1800s.

Hiking at Governor Dick can prove challenging, at some points on the path you'll literally need to beat the bush on the way to the tower. After all, it's the featured sight here. The path to the tower is almost straight up! When you're finished there you'll want to come back to Lancaster County. If you turn the wrong way after leaving the park, you may not notice for a while. If you get to Lickdale, turn around you went the wrong way.

Get back on track, head over to Mars, Pennsylvania . No jokes please, about men being from Mars and women from Venus. That joke doesn't fly in referring to Lancaster County; it shows your ignorance of geography. For your information, Venus is in Venango County. Moon isn't in this county; it's in Alleghany and Pluto isn't in this state, really!

Now that we've gotten through those lame jokes about the Solar System, let's keep going on our tour. Make your way over to Route 501 and head south to Lititz, Pennsylvania. Please pronounce my hometown correctly or you may blush. Lancaster County is a Bible belt, remember. Once you hit the high points in Lititz, may want to explore "kissing bridges", also known as covered bridges. Most tourists when coming to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania want to visit Amish country.

Amish country is a unique place with interesting towns and entertaining places. While in the heart of Amish country, make certain visit Bareville, Bird in Hand, Blue Ball, Intercourse and finally you'll be in Paradise. If I was taking this trip, I'd think twice if I were you about taking that side trip to Fertility. If you stop in Fertility, you may want or need to stop in Churchtown. Remember this is Amish Country, we are ultra conservative here. There are areas here where shot gun weddings are in vogue. I've been told there is another town in this area called Fornication; but I've never seen any signs of Fornication here.

For entertainment, stop in to a local farmer's market for some down-home Whoopie pies; these are soft chocolate cookies with cream in between. Don't forget Dutch Wonderland for a real adventure. If these towns and tastes are too wild for you, there is always Virginville over in Reading County, Pennsylvania.

If you decide to go further afield in your exploration of Pennsylvania, may I suggest some of the following towns, I've included the counties in which they are located. As the rest of the town, you can find them on the map:

Analominc, Monroe County
Panic, Jefferson County
Stalker, Wayne County
Erie, Erie County
Raunchtown & Fearnot, Schuylkill County
Jugtown & New Hope, Bucks County
Beaverdale, Cambria County

Perhaps you should save this next town in Indiana County, Pennsylvania for last, Climax!

I like how you left those REALLY controversial names, like Blue Ball and Intercourse, to the end of your piece. I thought they'd be FIRST! :)
