Landing the Nanny Job: Nanny Interview Tips

Michelle M. Guilbeau
Landing that dream nanny job can take some patience and some searching and researching to find the family that is a perfect fit for you and you a perfect fit for the family as well.

Once the searching is complete after looking for a nanny job, the next step is setting up the nanny interview. The concept of first impressions cannot ever be stressed enough; the first impression can make or break the chances of you landing the ideal nanny job.

Making sure you are completely and fully prepared for the nanny interview and ready to take on the challenges of a nanny job is crucial. Here you will find 5 nanny interview tips on how to make the best first impression and increase your chances of obtaining the ideal nanny job.

Bring a Resume

Bringing a resume shows that you are ready for the nanny job, you are confident to share your experiences and qualifications, plus you look more professional handing a resume to the prospective family. The family will appreciate having a concise and easy to read documented account of your experiences and qualifications.

Be on Time

I often read nanny type blogs and try to keep up to date on nanny related information. I have found that one of the most common reasons that a family lets a nanny go is because the nanny often arrives late and does not come at their scheduled start time, the nanny is considered unreliable by the family. Make sure that you arrive promptly at your scheduled interview time or even 5 minutes earlier is appropriate. Being late for your interview could possibly ruin your chances of getting that nanny job before the prospective family even hears about your qualifications.

Interact With the Kids

If the kids are in close proximity, be sure to interact with them even if it is only for a few minutes and also make sure to make eye contact. Asking the children simple questions such as their age and grade is a great way to start communication with the kids and will show the parents that you have a sincere desire to build a relationship with their children.

Find Out the Parent's Expectations

Start a dialogue with the parents as to their expectations of you as their child's nanny. Knowing what the parent expects will help you to better determine if this is your dream nanny job and the parents will appreciate your open line of communication and your willingness to listen to their needs and wants.

Share Your Love of Children

Parents want to know that you will love their kids as much as they do, so make sure to share with the parents when and how you decided the nanny job was the perfect job for you. Parents enjoy hearing and knowing that you have a true desire to work with kids and will take care of them to the best of their ability.

There is the ideal nanny job out there for you, just keep in mind that looking for a nanny job does take some work and patience but once you find that family that you love, it will all be well worth the effort!

Great tips. I think they work well with other job interviews too. Well, except for interacting with the kids. :)
