First designate an area you want to highlight. This can be anywhere from the front of the house, to an area in the middle of the front yard. People tend to over decorate their yards. All you need is one nice area to maintain for maximum curb appeal. You need to keep space defined and pick an area that is easily viewed from the street.
After you have chosen your area write down ideas that come to mind for the space. Do you want it surrounded with white rock. Maybe you can use large rocks or even a brick barrier. The barrier will separate the yard from your display. It is aesthetically pleasing. These can be found cheaply at hardware stores or gardening centers. Keep in mind there will be little to no planting flowers in this design.
After you've chosen an appropriate border it is time for a little one time work. You need to clear your designated area of plants and weeds. There are many weed killers available. You can also chose to pull the plants by hand. Be sure your area is not on a hill because your chosen planters will not sit evenly and may fall over. When pulling weeds it is important to remember to pull the roots. Tilling an area can help lift soil and make this an easier task.
Next, cover the area in a black, plastic tarp. This is also available at hardware stores. Do not use regular trash bags. They are thin and weeds will grow quickly through them. Make sure the area is completely covered. You can use multiple layers to protect against any unwanted plant growth. Place the Rocks or the border around the edges of the plastic. They will keep the plastic from getting moved or blown away.
Then you will make your choice of material to go over the plastic. Peat moss is one good idea. You can also get creative with this. You can buy recycled wood chips or whatever else suits your style. Be sure to get extra to provide enough coverage for your area. They can be found at almost any super center or even gas stations. check prices. Some cities have wood chips available to residents for no cost. These are available due to the trees the city removes throughout the year. They will have a lot where you can drive and remove the wood chips.
After your area is covered with wood chips you now get to shop for plants and accessories. It is best to not overcrowd the space. For example, you can include one or two large pots and maybe two hanging plants. Flower boxes are also a nice option. You can make them yourself or buy them already finished for a relatively low cost. They have rods available to hold hanging plants.
When choosing flowers following a few simple rules. Pick arrangements that display only two or three colors. This will provide a more landscaped look. Make sure the area you have chosen meets the requirements for the amount of sunlight a plant needs to survive. You can find this information on the tags or ask a store employee.
I suggest using only annuals, flowers that do not return the next year, because they are smaller i size and fit nicely in flower boxes. Perennials, flowers that return the next year, can also be used. They often need a larger area to strive and are not ideal for flower boxes.
Finally choose accessories. Popular items are looking balls and stepping stones. Just a couple of these can provide a nice feel of a garden. make sure to pick earthy tones and only a small amount of items. It will detract from the look if you have too many randomly placed items. You can also find nice wishing wells or other nature like items to use. Bird baths will create a calming feel, but make sure it doesn't appear too large in the space.
Finally, arrange all of your items in the space. It will look organized and well maintained. You can go years without needing to pull weeds or replace wood chips. You will need to replace annual flowers the next year though. You can keep the boxes or replace them also. Remember to water your flowers and keep your yard lively.
