Landscaping Project Planning Made Easy

Tips to Get Your Project Ready to Start

Jeff Schuman
If you are like many homeowners you would like to do something special to the outside of your home, but you are not a landscaping specialist. A well thought out landscaped yard can improve the value of your home and make it the envy of your neighbors. There is more to it than just putting up plants, trees, and xeriscaping.

Here are some ideas to help you plan your landscaping project.

Some of the goals of landscaping include the establishment of a blending between the house and your neighbors. You do not want it to stick out like a sore thumb, but to blends in naturally. As you get busy in your lives you may want to cut down on the grass and watering and go to more shrubs, rocks and bark. Many people waste so much money on landscaping because of poor planning or no planning at all so let's take a look at how you should plan your project.

For it to be practical and beautiful you need to think how the space is usually used and what will maximize your stay there by visualizing the things that you will put in it. It is important for you to look at the designs done before and learn from their innovation and mistakes as well.

You must have a good idea of the materials that are easily obtainable and how you will use them. You can drive around your neighborhood to get ideas on what you do and do not like to get ideas of your own.

Regarding the layout, look at the following: terrain, size of the area, and your budget. The terrain of your area means knowing its natural elevations, the kind of grass growing in it, trees already there, and other structures that may affect your plan.

The size of your yard will determine whether large items like islands or big trees should be included in the project. Your budget will be the main consideration when it comes to choosing the type of design and materials you will employ for the project.

One other point is this. You do not have to do it all at once. You can landscape in stages. By having a plan in place you can always refer to it to get started again. By not needing all of the money at one time this may allow you to do it the way you want over a period of time. If time is an issue you may want to hire some of the work out and do the rest yourself.
