Landscaping Tips for an Indoor Water Fountain

Kelly Spies
There is a never ending variety of indoor water fountain features you can add to your own fountain landscaping to create the perfect ambiance for your home. No matter what the décor of your house is there is a water fountain landscape suited to enhance your personal living space. Here are just a few ideas and tips to consider using in your water fountain.

Use artificial lights from electric bulbs or fluorescent lamps. Using artificial lighting enables you to grow live aquatic plants in your water fountain. Set them on a timer that simulates Mother Nature's daily cycles to get the best growth from your plants. Water lilies, Water Iris and Marsh Marigold are all plants that grow in still water.

In addition to providing artificial lighting from above your water fountain, think about using an underwater light to accentuate what's going on in the water. Place multicolored lights from behind the trickle of water that comes from your pump to highlight the movement.

Add fish to your water fountain. Even if your water fountain is a small bowl style fountain you can still add very small fish. Goldfish are cheap, small and easy for the beginner to raise. A more exotic type of goldfish you can use to spice up your water fountain would be the multi-colored Shubunkins.

Don't be afraid to abandon the plants. Rocks are all the rage. Rock water fountains can be every bit as pretty as one filled with pond plants and foliage. Certain types of pond fish thrive in a rocky environment. Use the rocks to your advantage in lighting and shape of your fountain.

Some of the best rocks for making your own indoor water fountain can be found along river banks, streams, creeks and country roads. All it takes is a little effort. For some reason, collecting your own rocks gives the fountain a new meaning.

Give it some flare, give it some fog. Fog adds a whole other element to an indoor water fountain. A water fountain fogger puts out a light mist that not only comes in pretty colors but also helps give humidity to your plants. Some foggers are even made to use with aromatherapy oils.

Go Green and go with bamboo. Bamboo pots, containers and shoots make excellent water fountain building supplies. They are light weight, fairly cheap and easy to work with. Waterproof your bamboo barrel with a good liner, add some floating aquatic plants and a koi or 2 and you're set.

Whatever features you decide to put in your indoor water fountain I wish you the best in creating beautiful indoor aquatic ambiance.

We had been considering an indoor fountain, but then we found a 55-gal aquarium outfit in a storage unit we bought. These are great suggestions, though!
