Language and Communication: There is a Difference

Connie Goetz
Humans could not survive without language or communication. Speaking seems like language and communication act in the same category but people should know they are not the same thing. Information cannot transfer to a person or machine without communication or language; therefore, you cannot have one without the other. If you could, then no one would be able to socialize with one another at any given time or place.

There are many different languages in the world today. Just within the United States, people come from different parts of the country, or the world and flee to the United States because we are not a communist country. We are the land of the free. For the most part, we stand for our beliefs. Wherever you go and whatever you see there are people with different languages.

There are many different languages in our society today. There is for example: different speaking languages, Braille for the blind, signing with your hands for the hearing impaired, facial expressions, body language, machines communicating with one another, like computers, and the written word. I can go on for a long time since most of everything that you do has to do with language or communication. There are so many different languages and different ways to communicate in the world so that you are able to talk with one another. You need to be able to communicate in some way shape or form for survival. How does a baby tell you it is hungry? It cries, it communicates in the only language it knows.

When it comes to communication you have verbal and non verbal language. Communication and language is almost the same thing but not quite the same. The way of language and communication is expanding through out the world as we know it today; hence, a person's knowledge expands daily. Language is widely ranged and there are so many types of communication. Communication could be considered in various forms like word of mouth, hand signals, range of motion, television, radio, and computers. There are a lot more but then I could go on for a long time. These are just some of examples that I wanted to share.

When I was in high school in a small town, we did not have foreign languages like the schools have today. As my children get older and I see them in school, the children are now offered Spanish and French classes in the high schools. Let me just take this a step further, Algebra is another language altogether. These classes are now required in order to graduate from high school. I wish that I knew a different language besides just the American English and a small portion of Algebra that we are taught in school today.

My son is seven years old and he is starting a language other than English. The language that he is practicing is signing with his hands. He loves it and he says that it is fun learning to do this. He also told me that he could not wait until he learns it well enough so that he could help other children out that need the special help that he can provide and make a difference and feel good about helping. My son is the nicest and sweetest child and thinks of other people before himself. He does things for other people and does not ask questions like most children of his age. In return he does not expect anything for it at all. He has been taught to be kind to everyone no matter if they have a different language or if you need to communicate to others in different ways. He is the perfect one in everyone's eyes. It does not matter if you are different at all. He will in return find a way to communicate with you so that both are able to speak any language to each other.

I would not want to live without being able to communicate in any way. There would be no reason for education because it would not be possible. I know that I would not like my life if I could not communicate. Language grows wild like the mushrooms that grow on trees and the ground, you never know where to start or stop; language is the same way.
