Laptops Versus Desktops

Laptops Are Becoming More Crucial in Today's Society

Matthew Schieltz
With more and more people involved in the wireless world of the internet, laptop computers are becoming increasingly important for those that need information on the go. There are many advantages for those who are college students, those who work wherever they are, and for those who find it of utmost importance to keep in touch with those they love.

Even though laptops have been on the market for several years, they have not been as popular until now. There are a couple reasons for that also. One of those reasons is that they have been too bulky in their design, not lightweight at all, and some have even been considerably slower than their desktop counterparts.

In today's day and age, however, laptop computers are equal, if not sometimes better, than desktop computers. For one thing, laptops aren't necessarily confined to a limited amount of memory, hard drive, or abilities. Now they can come with just as much as desktops. A laptop's hard drive is not limited to a certain size. Furthermore, a laptop can easily be purchased with an integrated wireless internet connection so that it won't be a hard process to get connected to the net wherever it goes.

So who are these laptops suitable for? Students, teachers, professors, doctors, lawyers, and the list goes on. College students can use laptops to take notes in class, type research papers for academic purposes, and stay in contact with their friends and family. However, laptops are not for everyone. Some people prefer desktops just because that's what they've always known. Furthermore, desktops are more suitable to families who need a computer that will stay in one place. Travelers, however, can use laptops to keep up on their business ventures wherever they are traveling.

Another characteristic that makes laptops perfect for those on the go is the fact that more and more of them are becoming lightweight and easy to carry. When laptops first came to the market, most of them were between eight and ten pounds, and sometimes heavier than that. However, laptop manufacturers are producing laptops that are lightweight because that not only appeals to more people, but it also makes laptop computers easier to carry. For example, college students are already bogged down with weighty books that they don't need another weighty item to carry around. Most laptops on the market today are between four and six pounds, a great reduction in weight compared to when they first came out.

Laptops are certainly one of the pieces of technology that the world is grateful for; one has to wonder, though, how much more laptop computers will be improved in the coming years. Will they be made even smaller than they are now? Will having a laptop be an option when it comes to an accessory while purchasing an automobile? One thing is for certain, though, and that is that laptops are definitely useful to many people across all professions and are used more and more to help people when they need that vital information!

I have both, and although I like the mobility of a laptop- I like the mouse on my desktop as well as the number keypad. I guess they both have their advantages. Good article!
