Laptops Vs. Desktops: The Ultimate Choice

Nico Riley
Years ago when I was shopping around for my computer, I didn't weigh my options between getting a laptop and a desktop. I saw an ad for a Dell desktop and called right away. I can't say that I regret my decision of purchasing a desktop, however, these days I would like to buy a laptop for their convenience factor. While laptops have the mobility factor over desktops, there are still pros and cons to each choice. And while I'm looking to purchase a laptop in the near future, I will still use my desktop as well.

If mobility is most important to you, a laptop is definitely the way to go. There are even many places where you can access the internet for free through WIFI. With a desktop, you will have to subscribe to an internet service which will only be accessible from that particular location where you use your computer.

Another thing to think about before purchasing a laptop or a desktop is the amount of storage space you will need. Laptops tend to have less storage space than desktops. The GB for laptops is about 100 compared to as much as 500 GB for desktops. The amount of hard drive space is a very big deal and is important to consider when making your decision. If you're going to be using lots of hard drive space, a desktop will be your best bet.

What about those who are into graphics and gaming? Well, while laptop graphics have improved greatly over the years, the graphics on desktops tend to be better. However, you can always upgrade your computer with better graphics, especially if you go with a company like Dell who builds your computer to suit your wants and needs. While it's possible to upgrade, upgrading a laptop is more difficult than upgrading a desktop. If you add another hard drive to a laptop, that means having to plug in an external disk that will make traveling around with your computer more difficult for you. Another con about upgrading laptops is the fact that many laptop motherboards can't be upgraded at all, nor can optical drives or CPUs. And upgrading a laptop will crush your pockets more than upgrading a desktop. Repairs for laptops are also more expensive than repairs for desktops.

You can buy accessories for you laptop such as an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor when using your laptop in an office setting. Obviously, you already get those things when you purchase a desktop. Both laptops and desktops can be equipped with the latest CD/DVD Rom and burning capabilities.

Ultimately, your purchase is going to be your choice and should be made to best suit your computer needs. For those who can afford it you might want to consider in purchasing both a desktop and a laptop. You can use the laptop for travel or business and use the desktop for your personal use. Your desktop can be used as your back up to store files. It can be your basis for sending and receiving faxes, printing materials, and adding that extra security knowing that your laptop files are backed up on your desktop just in case something should happen to your laptop. Although you don't have to have both you may find it more convenient, but then again, maybe one computer is just enough for you.
