Laptops Vs Desktops: Which One Suits You?

Jem Geek
Today, the commonly used types of personal computers are the laptops and desktops. Laptops as the name suggests, can be put on the lap and away you go. Desktops on the other hand are placed on a table for use. So which is the best option? And what are the pros and cons associated with each of them. This article will clearly give you the advantages and disadvantages of each but it is up to you to choose the one you prefer.

Firstly, there is the issue of cost. Laptops are more expensive compared to desktops. If there are two computers one a laptop and the other a desktop with similar specs and capabilities, the laptop will cost more by a factor of two and a half to three. This is mainly because laptops have to be made by a specific manufacturer like Toshiba, dell, apple and many others. The reason for this is that laptops need skilled labor in production, the machinery that is used in their assemblage is highly specific and gadgets used in laptops are smaller than for desktops.

The cost of desktops is less because the labor needed in its compilation is very low in skill compared to that of laptops. You just need a fair understanding of computer hardware to make your own CPU. There are only like 15 to 20 connections needed and you can obviously do this after seeing it being done a couple of times. There are no machines needed to compile your own computer.

To add salt to the wound is the fact that there are no cloned laptops. Cloning is the process of putting parts of a computer together to form a fully functional computer by the consumer and for the consumer. If it was possible to buy parts of a laptop and put them together forming a working laptop, then its cost would be far less.

Laptops need specialized maintenance which is not the case for desktops. You can clean and replace parts of your desktop which you cannot do with your laptop.

Portability of laptops is their major benefit. Laptops can be carried and used virtually everywhere which is not possible with desktops. This is possible by the use of batteries. Battery life is therefore of major importance as it determines the length of time away from a power source a user can be. There have been incidences of laptop batteries catching fire, these are isolated incidences involving a particular make of laptops. Note that the owners have been refunded and the suspected faulty batteries recalled at no cost to the owner.

Laptops are easily damaged compared to desktops because of their mobility. Desktops stay in one place and less vulnerable to damages.

Theft of property is demoralizing and theft of laptops is more than that of desktops because they are carried everywhere leading to targeting by robbers. They can also be misplaced or forgotten in places such as airports.
Desktops are easy to expand by the addition of more hard disks, memory sticks and drives. Laptops on the other hand, if upgrading is required, then that part has to be removed and replaces by a better one.

The specs of desktops are far greater than those of laptops. To get a laptop having 750GB of storage spaces is rare but down to earth with desktops. The smaller the computer, the less the specs and features so, palmtops have fewer capabilities compared to laptops.

So before you opt for a laptop or desktop, take these points into consideration and select the one that suits you.
