Larceny from Vehicles Down in Ferndale While Up Elsewhere
Neighborhood: downtown
Ferndale, MI 48220
United States of America
It is very interesting to note that while the offense of larceny from vehicles is up in the area around Ferndale, it is down in Ferndale itself. While many other cities are having issues with buglers breaking into cars to steal GPS devices, iPods, and laptops, the crime is down in Ferndale.

Last October (2009), there were 14 cases of larceny from vehicles. In October of 2010, the number was cut in half to only seven instances. I contacted the Ferndale Police Department for their take on this issue, and I was told that it has a lot to do with neighbors who are watchful of their neighborhoods. They believe that the people of Ferndale have a lot to do with the fact that this type of crime is down.

The real note should be the fact that Royal Oak, Birmingham, Troy, and many of the other neighboring cities have increases in larceny from vehicles in their downtown areas. Ferndale, to this point, has not had this issue in the downtown parking lots.
