The leaves of the catalpa tree are large heat shaped leaves that can shade an area in your yard from the hot sun. The leaves of the catalpa tree are very thick and dense so they create a great shaded area for birds as well as humans.
In the summer the catalpa tree can form a pod that is long and slender. The pod of the catalpa tree is similar to a cigar in looks as they are long and brown. The catalpa tree has the nickname cigar tree because of the long brown seed pods that it produces look like cigars. These long brown pods can be lovely or then can be a nuisance depending on how you look at it. Each pod is filled with small flat seeds that can be grown into a new catalpa tree.
The catalpa tree is a rather slow growing tree that may reach a height of about sixty feet when they are mature. A ten year old catalpa tree may only be twenty feet tall.
The wood of the catalpa tree is not very desirable. It is a soft wood that is good for carving but is not good for building or for using as firewood.
The catalpa tree is a fairly hardy tree that has few enemies but it is eaten by a moth that loves to eat the leaves of the catalpa tree. This moth can eat the leaves of the catalpa tree and if the tree is stripped of it's leave long enough it will die.
Catalpa trees can grow to be quite old. When you plant a catalpa tree expect it to be around for the rest of your life. The catalpa is a beautiful tree that is worth having as an ornamental tree. The flowers of the catalpa are very pleasing. You can pick the flowers and use them in an indoor flower arrangement. The brown pods of the catalpa can also be used as an indoor decoration. Catalpa trees are lovely ornamental trees that can enhance your yard. For more information about catalpa trees you can go on the net to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalpa.
