Large Research Study to Determine Long-Term Cell Usage and Possible Health Concerns

Looking for Any Links Between Medical Conditions and Cell Phones

Approximately a quarter of a million people in Europe may become the largest research study ever. The research study on cell phone usage on a person's health long term is being conducted by Cohort Study on Mobile Communications or COSMOS. The participants are people from five different European countries and will be conducted over a span of thirty years.

The study will differ from other studies because it will follow the participants in real time as opposed to other attempts. The majority of other large studies simply asked people who already had diseases or conditions about their use of cellphones. This is the first long term study of cell phones since cell phones in general have only been around for a relatively short period of time.

In previous studies there was a lot of room for error by asking people questions on their past usage. Many health organizations will be following the data gathered by COSMOS, after all cell phones are quite popular and have pretty much become a necessity.

The COSMOS research study will be focusing on cell phone usage long term and announce their findings as the study progresses.

The COSMOS research study is only a small part of the UK research body called "The Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Program." Basically MTHR hopes to look at the long term data and determine if there is anything cellphone companies should be looking at in regards to health risks.

The COSMOS research study is asking for participants between the ages of 18-69 and will require the participants answer a questionnaire, and volunteer their phone bills and health records for the research usage.

Previous studies have run into resistance over privacy matters and allowing their personal information to be viewed.

COSMOS is hoping that approximately 100,000 cell phone uses will sign up in Britain, however the evening that the study launched only a little over 200 had actually signed up.

The COSMOS study will monitor any health developments of participants and look for any signs linking their cell phone usage to any diseases such as Parkinson's, cancer and Alzheimer's.

The study will also track the participant's cell phone data on how much they are actually using their cell phones, as well as how they carry them such as in a handbag or in their pants. As well as if they use hand's free systems such as Bluetooth headsets.

It stands to reason all cell phone carriers and manufacturers will keep close watch on their findings as they progress, as well as many health professionals around the world.
