Las Vegas on a Budget: Saving Money in Sin City

Stephanie Michael
Taking a vacation to Vegas doesn't have to be synonymous with losing all your money. If you plan ahead you can have a great time without breaking the bank. There are deals everywhere but you might need to look around and cut a few coupons. Make sure to ask a local for any current specials they may know about. If you don't know someone personally try the concierge, bell boys, other hotel employees, or someone working at the club you're interested in. Here are some great tips on how to have a cheap Las Vegas Vacation.

Cheap Rooms
Most hotels offer the cheapest room rates available direct through their website. As is usually the case a room will be cheaper during the week and during the off season so make sure to call ahead and check to see if there are any specials being offered or that will be offered in a month or so.. Also make sure to ask for available free upgrades when you go to check in.. Hotels like the Rio, the palms, or other off the main strip hotels will sometimes be cheaper.

Cheap Entertainment
Check out Tix4Tonight, a ticket service offering same day discounts on featured shows. They have locations inside the Fashion Show Mall, at the Hawaiian Marketplace, at the showcase mall located near the MGM grand, at Bill's Gambling Hall, and at the Four Queens. Also check out off the strip shows for great prices. Town Square is only about ten minutes from the strip but boasts shopping, restaurants, dance clubs, and the Shear Madness theatre which features "Free Beer" the improv group. The $20 admission fee gets you in and your first drink free. It's a show similar to "Whose line is it anyway" so it's fun for the audience and different every night. Make sure and talk to the VIP hosts stationed around the hotel. You can spot them by looking for the person standing in the path to the clubs and passing out business cards or bracelets. It's their job to get people into the clubs and with any luck you might get in for free or get free VIP service. Get off the strip all together by visiting Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, or Mt Charleston. Check out this article on outdoor fun in Vegas.

Cheap Food

In this city buffets are king and usually the best place to find a deal. Most places offer dinner buffet for $20 or less and a discounted rate during the day. The Palms Dinner Buffet is only $12 and is one of the best I've found. If buffets aren't your thing there are plenty of deals if you know where to look. America inside the New York New York offers American style fare at reasonable prices and Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is a great place to find cheap lunch for the family but during the evening party goers arrive for the cheap drink and food prices.

If you have to drop big bucks on a nice room, or a show you've been waiting for that's fine, but there's just no reason to spend more than you have to, especially if you're in Las Vegas. This is a city that was built on deals, showgirls, and cheap buffets so why should you get ripped off. Make sure you shop around before you get here and ask around once you land. And remember that what happens in Vegas, inevitably winds up on the internet.

Don't forget Stoney's! 5 dollar admission, and Thursdays and Sundays are ladies' nights where it's only a dollar a drink for females. Also, the Neonopolis in downtown have some great places to check out for relatively cheap.

My one trip to LV was enough for me, but if I were to go back, I'd appreciate this info.
