Las Vegas: How to Get a Job as a Las Vegas Showgirl

Ted Sherman
Working as a Las Vegas showgirl seems like a dream job, all flashing costumes, glamor, bright lights and everything else the town is famous for luring visitors. However, before you consider applying to become a Las Vegas showgirl, take some basic steps. Look in the mirror in total honesty. Then ask yourself some basic questions.

Are you very tall and very slim? Are you embarrassed when you wear a bikini or less in public? Years ago in Vegas, showgirls just paraded around in skimpy costumes. Today, they must also be good dancers. Have you had professional training and experience in dance?

You must also consider some more serious questions. Are you actually prepared to leave your hometown to live in Vegas? Have you looked into cost of living there? The average Vegas showgirl earns less than $500 a week. The typical Vegas studio apartment, including utilities, cable and phone, costs $1,000 a month. Can you budget the remaining income for food, clothing, taxes, insurance, transportation and other expenses?

A good idea to research your thoughts about moving to Vegas is to visit with friends or family. Go to the shows that feature showgirls. After the performances, ask to go backstage and talk with them about the good and not-so-good things about their jobs. Then, once you've decided you have the looks, dance skills, are willing to relocate and can live on a showgirl's income, how do you go about getting the job?

The easiest way to get hired fast in Vegas show is to be already working as a showgirl in a classy place, preferably New York, London, Paris or on a current TV program. Get together a resume, photos and a DVD showing you dancing alone or in an ensemble on stage. Youth is an advantage, but real experience and dancing skills are more important.

Before you book a flight and go looking for a job in Vegas, find the email addresses of potential employers there at clubs, hotels, theaters and other places that feature showgirls. Email a brief resume with a recent photo or short video of you in costume.

You may also send the email to several Vegas employment agencies that specialize in show business listings. Just be aware that if an agency gets you a job, it will cost you at least a week's salary for the service.

Whatever your plans, be careful in dealing with Vegas contacts. Make sure they are for legitimate showgirl jobs. They don't call it Sin City for nothing.
