Las Vegas Monorail: Pros, Cons and Tips

Shirley Adkins
The Las Vegas Monorail is the quickest way to travel the 3.9 mile strip between Sahara and the MGM. It covers seven stations and only takes 15 minutes or less.

Sahara Station
Las Vegas Hilton Station
Las Vegas Convention Center Station
Harrah's / Imperial Palace Station
Flamingo / Caesars Palace Station
Bally's & Paris Las Vegas Station
MGM Grand Station

TIPS
Wear comfortable shoes (there's a LOT of walking involved).
DON'T ride this expecting a great view (you see mostly alleys and parking garages).
You must select the type of ticket you want BEFORE you put your money in the automated ticket machines.
Ticket machines gives up to $20 in change (change is given in $1 COINS).

PROS
Never a wait of over just a few minutes (trains come every 7 minutes or so).
Fast, efficient and clean (99% of its scheduled stops are on time).
A great value if you are staying on the EAST side of the Strip.
Walk through air conditioned casinos instead of along the strip when its 110 outside.
Allows you to see inside some places you may have otherwise not seen.
Each stop has access to the other side of the strip, mostly from skywalks.
Gets you from the south end of the strip to the north.
Avoids stoplights, pedestrians, and traffic.
Is a lot faster than taking the Deuce bus.
Usually less crowded than the buses.

CONS
Stations are located at the back of the major hotels on the strip.
Have to do a lot of walking to get to the stations.
Map will say that a stop is for a bunch of different casinos, but they require a lot of walking to get to them.
Only covers a small part of the strip.
Does not connect to Fremont Street.
Does not run on the WEST side of strip.
Signs in the casinos directing you to the stations are sometimes hard to find.
More expensive compared to the Deuce double decker bus.
Stops are too few and far in between.

CONCLUSIONS
Is simply another alternative to getting around the Las Vegas Strip.
Needs to be put on the other side of the strip too.
In comparison to other cities, this system isn't the best but it is a good start.
Does not always prove to be the most convenient form of transportation with all the walking that is involved.
