Las Vegas Parachuting: Knowing What to Look for on Your Ride Down

Mike Beede
Want to know about the sights you'll likely see while skydiving in and around Las Vegas, Nevada? For those new to Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Valley is a large flat area surrounded by mountains on most sides. Las Vegas is in a desert with many ecosystems and geographical features, including bright and colorful sandstone. You will most likely be surprised at how far you can see due to the lack of humidity and large flat area contrasted sharply by mountains. Las Vegas is close to two state parks, Red Rock and Valley of Fire, as well as Lake Meade and the massive hydroelectric Hoover Dam that created the lake in the 1930s.

Although the views can vary greatly depending on the Drop Zone, a skydiving experience in Las Vegas gives you a great view of some of Nevada's most impressive geographic landmarks as well as the most identifiable city landscape in the world: The Las Vegas Strip. The low humidity of the desert increases visibility so that it is possible to see these landmarks:

· Hoover Dam, Nevada's historic 726 ft hydroelectric dam along the Colorado River is mighty in its own right and the lake it created, Lake Meade is a sight to see as well.

· Mt. Charleston, a popular skiing/snowboarding mountain one hours drive from Las Vegas, is rich in Desert Pine trees and sharp slopes.

· Boulder City, a 10 minute freeway ride from downtown Las Vegas, is a town that developed in the 1930's during the construction of Hoover Dam (formerly known as Boulder Dam).

· Red Rock National Park. The name says it all, amazing sandstone formations in deep red and bleach white form stunning centerpieces in a desert landscape. This is one of the most easily recognized feature of Las Vegas and can be seen easily from a plane while landing or leaving Las Vegas.

· Valley of Fire National Park is another pristine example of desert geology. This is closer to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam than Red Rock.

Knowing what you'll see on your Las Vegas skydiving jump will allow you to enjoy the ride even more.

Your tandem skydiving instructor will be there the whole way to make sure you float safely to the ground as you soak in the 360 degree views you just experienced like never before. You will leave the experience rich in memories and a new perspective on life.
