Laser Resurfacing: A Fairly New Cosmetic Procedure

Laser resurfacing is used to remove skin so new skin can form in its place. Few studies have been done on this new procedure, although it is promising as there is more control with penetration depth into the skin. Laser resurfacing has more control than using other methods. There are two ways of going about this procedure. One being the CO2 laser and the second procedure is erbium laser. These procedures uses a beam of laser to vaporize the top layers of skin that are damaged.

Laser resurfacing is most commonly used to remove areas of skin that are damaged, wrinkled, or used to treat acne. This procedure is used to minimize fine lines, most often around the mouth and eyes. Laser resurfacing is also used to treat facial scars or areas where there are signs of uneven pigmentation. Superficial or medium resurfacing is performed so the laser can be limited to the epidermis and papillary dermis. Upper levels of the reticulas dermis may be removed as well.

Risks associated with this procedure are burns from the heat of the laser energy, scarring, lightening, or darkening of the skin. People who have darker skin take the risk of the laser causing uneven skin tones. Laser resurfacing may also activate herpes virus infections.

As most practitioners use this laser resurfacing technique, not all have the same level of experience. It is always best to find a practitioner who is adequately trained to perform this procedure. Also find a surgeon who has special training in laser surgery. Always ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have. Make sure you let your practitioner know of any medications you may be taking. If you are not careful in the practitioner that you choose, you may choose one that isn't as qualified as others. This may lead to more scarring, burning, and healing time; it may also lead to more serious problems due to the inexperience of the practitioner.

Prices for laser resurfacing vary. It depends on the surgeon you choose and other things you may need during and after this procedure. Surgeon's fee alone may run $2,317. This procedure is usually not covered by medical insurance. If it is a medical necessity to be use to modify scars or remove pre-cancerous skin growths, some insurances may pay for this procedure. You may also inquire financing through the clinic or creditors. Make sure you shop around and find the one that will offer you the lowest interest rates.
