Lasik Cost: Is it Worth It?

Susan Slobac
Lasik Cost in the Front Range communities of Denver, Aurora, Loveland and other areas are not the highest in the country. That's the good news.

The not-so-good news is that most insurers consider it to be an elective cosmetic procedure and therefore will not normally cover lasik cost. However, most lasik providers in the Denver Colorado metro region offer generous financing that is often interest-free and can be arranged to fit virtually any budget.

Factors Affecting Lasik Cost

Although lasik itself is a relatively simple and fast procedure, Lasik Cost is not so simple. There are many different factors that can affect lasik costs:

1. Location. Although lasik costs throughout the Front Range area is relatively low compared to the San Francisco Bay region or the borough of Manhattan, the actual location of a clinic can determine a surgeon's overhead costs. Renting office space in downtown Denver can be substantially more expensive than renting in Aurora or the other outlying areas.

2. Technology. The last few years have seen many exciting advances in the tools of laser surgery. However, virtually any technology when first introduced is expensive; in addition, the private corporations that develop and market such tools often require surgeons to pay royalties each time they perform a procedure; this can add anywhere from $50 to $200 per eye to lasik costs.

3. Skill and Experience. Here, you definitely get what you pay for. Lasik surgeons with a great deal of skill and experience command higher fees. These fees are well worth it; "cheap" lasik is not a good idea, and can cost far more in the long run when you have to go back to an eye surgeon to have problems and complications corrected.

Covering Lasik Costs

While active members of the military and employees of certain major corporations may find they can get their lasik costs covered in whole or part, most lasik patients find they must pay the full costs out-of-pocket. Fortunately, most Denver lasik providers have financing available that is flexible enough to fit a range of situations. It is possible that financing lasik costs can be obtained for as little as a dollar a day.

This is another reason why you can - and should - pay for the most experience and surgical skill you can. Once lasik costs are spread out over the course of several months, the difference between the fees charged by a "cut-rate" doctor and a skilled, experienced lasik surgeon are inconsequential. At most, the difference is a few dollars a month.
