Last Days

James R. Ford

God help me

she cried out

severe pain

from the stomach to the head

I heard her from the next room

and wept

not so quietly

God help me

she cried out again

she can see flowers blooming

the hibiscus is in full color

roses and bougainvillas

are blossoming like there's no tomorrow

I go to comfort her

her eyes are closed

teeth beside her in a jar of water

I prayed

then walked away

receiving the answer

one week later.
