Last Diary of a Dead Care Bear

Ryan Dalton
On October 4, 2008, a small nation in Eastern Europe was razed to the ground, caught suddenly in a wave of devastation. In the following months, the dust settled and the radiation faded. Relief workers entered to find nothing but a broken land, and the only clue to its fate was a small journal, burned beyond legibility. All except for the last entry......

October 3, 2008

They told me I was crazy. But I knew this day would come.

How many years have I warned them? It doesn't matter now. It's happened, just like I said it would. We've finally done it.....finally crossed over and there is no going back. Years of caring, years of sharing, years of holding back the tide of darkness threatening to sweep the land, and finally.....the darkness has become us.

Professor Coldheart should have seen it coming.....should have known the game would change the moment he sent Auntie Freeze and Frostbite to eliminate Tenderheart Bear. Poor, naive fool just offered them a hug, never suspecting until the dagger plunged into his furry little chest. He never imagined they would be so cold. But then, Coldheart never imagined our retribution would be so swift. So savage.

I wonder, did he scream when he opened our "gift"? The box we sent, wrapped in pretty rainbow sparkles and stuffed with Frostbite's head - still warm after Funshine Bear sliced it off with a blade of solar energy from his belly badge. Or perhaps he just stared at it in frozen indifference, the way he had when Wish Bear had wished for Auntie Freeze to burn before our eyes, setting her ablaze until only her black bones remained.

The next days were dark in the land of Caring. Cheer Bear leaped to his death in a fit of grief. Heartsong Bear composed a dirge of such infinite sadness that Oopsy Bear, blind with tears, tripped and plunged into a wood chipper. Daydream Bear told tales of the final oblivion that awaits us all, while Good Luck Bear cursed the ground and all who walk on it. And through it all, the good professor hid in his castle, cackling with glee.

He thinks we are finished, that this time he's won. But we are the darkness, and the darkness always wins. Tomorrow, we will show him the true meaning of caring, for retribution has become all we care for. And so, as the sun reaches across our broken land, I will lead my Bears into battle. I will watch as Secret Bear and Surprise Bear seed the ground with their lethal traps, while Forest Friend Bear sets the woods ablaze to herald our coming. I will smile as Grumpy Bear drowns our foes in a raincloud of tears. I will sigh with satisfaction as Friend Bear hugs Professor Coldheart until his icy soul squeezes out of his pores and drips to the blood-soaked earth in slow, lazy droplets. I will do this because it is my purpose. It is my destiny.

I was born for this day. I'm Vengeance Bear.
