“Last Man Standing” on ABC May Offend Some Men

Diane Zoller-Ciatto

"Last Man Standing" starts tonight on ABC, right before "Dancing with the Stars," and a pretty good time slot on the Tuesday night lineup. But according to Alan Sepinwall, television critic of New Jersey's "The Star-Ledger" newspaper, it may be over the top according to his column in today's paper. (Sorry article is not online)

Tim Allen stars as the only man in a household of women is a sexist, homophobe, xenophobe executive of a sporting goods company. He plays Mike Baxter, his wife Vanessa is played by Nancy Travis and together they have three daughters. He previously traveled around the globe for his job finding sports and sporting goods to hawk for the company. Now, he is grounded by his boss, played by Hector Elizondo, and is relegated to fix their lame website.

He complains that there are "no real men anymore." He gripes that men cannot even fix a tire anymore and prefers his office because "it smells like balls in here." He has no idea just what "Glee" is and Sepinwall wonders if it is just a big joke?

Tim Allen has starred in "Home Improvement" as a chauvinistic character and did very well in that part, but if this attempt become a hit will fly is soon to be decided, as it starts in only a few hours.

Not a Tim Allen fan at all - looks like I'll skip this.

    Maybe I'll check it out.

Hubby and I watched it and thought it was very funny. I'm afraid that as a society, we're being forced to walk on eggshells too much these days. No matter what you say, it will inevitably "offend" someone out there. We still need to laugh at ourselves and have a sense of humor. So as long as Tim Allen's show is on, we'll be watching and laughing and getting a little break from reality.

I actually enjoyed "Home Improvement," because it so often was about Tim improvement, with his strong wife and his next-door mentor. I think I'll pass on this one - thanks for the warning.

We only watched a little of it before sitting down to dinner so I didn't really grasp the intent of the show.
