Last Minute Decorations Ideas for Your Kid's Party

You're in trouble now. You put off getting decorations for your kid's party, and now there's no time to make orders, plans, or even a run to the store. You've probably already started envisioning all the tragic, disappointed faces of your kid's friends. You fear being the uncool parent.

Relax. With a little creativity and a little courage, last minute party decorations can be just as good as anything bought in the store, and a little friendlier for the environment, too!

First, let's talk streamers. Most kids' parties are awash with the cheap, colorful crepe, but in the end, it all gets dumped in the trash, anyway. Here are a couple of unique ideas for a last minute decoration substitute: Raid the recycling bin for aluminum cans (leave the beer cans alone). String these like popcorn with a needle and thread; you can hang them by the tabs if you've left them on. The result is a colorful, shiny, earth-friendly garland to decorate your house. Another last minute streamer trick is to string CD's together in a similar way, leaving the iridescent side visible. The lighting effects will be neat, and most kids won't recognize a CD anymore anyhow, so your secret will be safe.

Other last minute decoration ideas for your kid's party are all around you. Raid your garden and yard for flowers. Even the tiny spring beauties or the irritating dandelions can be combined to create little bouquets, centerpieces, or even confetti. Magazines and used wrapping paper can also be turned into confetti with a little work.

Look through your sewing supplies for ribbon and tie bows on everything for a festive flair. If you're going for a more sophisticated affair, clear glasses with colored water make a nice center piece or accent. Add floating candles if you have them, but don't sweat it if you don't.

If your kid's party is in the middle of the summer, make it a Christmas in July theme. Dig your Christmas decorations out of the attic, and deck the halls! Everyone will think that you had it planned well in advance; no one would guess that this was just a last minute decoration trick.
