Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas for Free

Lori Wheat
If you have decided at the last minute to go to a Halloween costume party, you need to come up with a costume in a hurry. The Halloween costume aisles at the store have been thrice picked over, and nothing is left that fits you or that you would consider wearing. You do not want to pay the amount the costume rental store charges, and you do not really feel like wearing a costume that has been rented and worn by someone or someones else, anyway. What to do? Consider these free or frugal last minute Halloween costume ideas.

The Hipster T-shirt "Costume"

If you are too cool to actually wear a regular Halloween costume, then go through the drawer of old t-shirts you own but never have an occasion to wear. For example, you may have a Simpsons style gory Itchy and Scratchy t-shirt that would be perfect to wear to a Halloween party. If you are a Stanley Kubrick fan, perhaps you have a scary Jack Nicholson "Here's Johnny!" shirt. If you are an animal rights activist, you may have a graphic PETA t-shirt that says "meat is murder."

For a very simple t-shirt idea, and to really freak people out on Halloween, stitch the word "satan" on an otherwise plain black t-shirt. Pair the "satan" t-shirt with jeans, and you have your Halloween costume. People will probably think it's hilarious and quite clever. The hipster factor is off the charts.

The number of t-shirts appropriate to wear to a Halloween party rather than the typical full Halloween costume is endless. Getting dressed for the party will be a breeze. You will not have to deal with the limiting aspects of a Halloween costume, such as taking off your mask in order to interact with other party-goers.

Last Year's Costume

Want a "real" Halloween costume? Consider wearing a costume you have worn to previous Halloween parties, especially if the people at this year's Halloween party have never seen your costume before.

The Prom Queen or Bloody Carrie

Have an old prom dress or other formal style dress you will probably never wear again? Pull it out and dress up as a prom queen for Halloween. The more hideous the dress, the better (think 1970s or 80s prom "did I really wear that!?"). If you truly know you will never wear the formal dress again, spill fake blood on the dress, and go as Stephen King's Carrie.
