It's April 15th and phew, you're relieved because you got your income tax finished and put in a mailbox. You're all done right? Not necessarily. The U.S. Post Office recomends you check the times on the mail box to make sure there is a pick-up before midnight. Otherwise the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can consider slapping on a late filing penalty.
NOT EVERY LOCAL POST OFFICE WILL HAVE EXTENDED OR LATE POST OFFICE HOURS ON TAX DAY
Because online filing is more prevalent, this is the first year where local offices which may have been open in the past, may not have extended hours on tax day. To make sure, check with the United States Postal Service at USPS.com.
IT'S LATE IN THE EVENING, WHERE DO I GO TO MAIL?
To find out LATE post office hours on tax day which will be open late, enter your zip code on USPS.com. You can also check with courier companies or FedEx. If you're going to put your income tax return in a drive-up post office box or box outside the post office, make sure the pick-up time is valid.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH POSTAGE
Doublecheck you have enough postage. The U.S. Post Office also advises that if you don't want to wait in long counter lines to ensure your income tax is postmarked correctly, just add extra postage just to be sure.
WHAT IF I WON'T BE DONE IN TIME
If you absolutely won't be done in time and late post office hours on tax day won't be enough help, consider e-filing an income tax extension. Here is one way to do it on filelater.com
BENEFITS OF FILING ON TIME
The sooner you file, the sooner the government will send you an economic stimulus check. That's $600 for most individuals or $1200 for married couples.
