Late Season Rabbit Hunting Tips

Advice and Tactics for Late Season Rabbit Hunting

J. Motes
Here are some late season rabbit hunting tips that hunters can use to bag more rabbits in the last weeks of the hunting season. As the rabbit hunting season nears an end, hunting is often poor. Many rabbits will have already been taken and those that remain will have a few months of fresh survival lessons taught by encounters with beagles and hunters, as well as the daily threat from foxes, coyotes, etc. However, this does not mean that it isn't possible to bag a few rabbits or to even take a limit, it only means that hunters need to adjust their tactics and hunt harder to find these late season survivors.

Hunt Slowly

Late season rabbit hunters need to work their dogs or stomp the brush thoroughly over each pocket of brush as late season rabbits may sit tight and not quickly jump.

Track Rabbits

Late season rabbit hunting often means snow on the ground which can help hunters and dogs to find rabbits. When snow is in the forecast as the last days of rabbit season are ticking away, hunters should be planning a trip.

Hunt Inaccessible Areas

When rabbit hunting many hunters skip over certain areas that are too miserable to hunt. Deep ravines and steep right of ways are just two examples. In many cases, late season rabbit hunters have two choices: hunt areas that have been thoroughly hunted for months or hit these miserable places which probably still hold rabbits.

Check Out Small Pockets of Cover

Small pockets of cover are another area that other hunters may have overlooked as the season progressed. Rabbits do not need a lot of room as long as the cover can provide shelter from predators and access to a food source.

Hit the Woods

As most hunters hunt brushy edges of fields and other openings, and as these areas are rapidly becoming less common, rabbits are more likely to find homes in the woods. Fallen trees and limbs and other structure can provide ideal rabbit habitat. When the fence rows, overgrown pastures, and other traditional hunting areas aren't producing, hunters should head into the woods when rabbit hunting. Hunters may also encounter grouse when looking for woods rabbits, make certain that they are in season and be ready.
